Dominick & Haff RARE Double Eagle Sterling Tray -1907

Description

A rare and beautiful DOUBLE-EAGLE/rope border tray made by Dominick & Haff in 1907.  Based on the S attached to the production number we believe this to have been a custom-made piece.
It was ordered by H Mahler & Son's - jewelers and silversmiths in their own right. (The sons took over upon the death of their father Henry in 1895 and renamed their Raleigh NC store H. Mahler's Sons in 1896 and operated until the firm went bankrupt in 1832.)
The tray is 6 3/8" (eagle to eagle) by 5 3/4" and weighs 187.7 grams. The piece has the hallmarks for Dominick & Haff 1907, H. Mahler's Sons, Sterling as well as a production number S6629.  Again, the S leads us to believe this was a special order.
We can not find another example Dominick & Haff Double Eagle tray and probably will never come across another one.
Condition:  There is one very minor abrasion near the H. Mahler's and Sons hallmark. It looks like something was buffed out but it is a very small area (approx. 3mm x 5 mm).  It also appears to have some watermark staining on the base as well.  We'll leave the buffing out of this to the next caretaker. It does show fine scratches from age but overall, we consider this to be in excellent condition.
Based on customer preference, we only lightly polish our silver.
